Isaac Hayden says that no one at Newcastle United is surprised by the emergence of Sean Longstaff.
The youngster has shone in midfield alongside Hayden in recent games.
Injuries and suspensions meant the two were given a chance as a midfield pair and they have not looked back since.
"I think it was more that everybody had wrote us off. That was the most pertinent thing," Hayden told NUFC TV.
"You look back at the first game we started together, I think it was Chelsea away, and with all due respect to ourselves, people were looking at it thinking Newcastle had no chance.
"They are done for, the players who have been playing week-in, week-out before are injured - but that spurred us both on.
"We hadn't played that much since the start of the season so when we got the opportunity to play we were just desperate to keep playing.
"The games we were playing as well, we had to be switched on, we had to be good.
"When we played against the lesser teams, it was about showing your levels. We gained confidence from the Man City game and that brought us on really."
