Manchester United transfer target Bruno Fernandes has signed a new long-term contract at Sporting Lisbon despite links also to Tottenham. The Portuguese was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer but a transfer never materialised.
United and Tottenham both failed to agree any deal for the talented 25-year-old midfielder.
Both clubs were tipped to offer new huge offers in January for Bruno Fernandes but now he is more expensive due to his release clause in his new contract.
His contract will run until 2023, with Sporting reportedly increasing Fernandes’ buyout clause to £85m.
Fernandes explained his decision to commit his future to the Portuguese side, insisting it’s an honour to play for Sporting.
"For me it is a great source of pride and recognition of my work, itis a sign that I am doing well," Fernandes told Sporting's official website.
"I have been doing everything possible to do my best for the club.
"[The new contract] is because of what I have done on the pitch, but it also shows that I love being at Sporting and I am proud to represent this club.
"You can expect more and even better things from me.
"I promise to show the same commitment and dedication so we can have more moments of glory than last season."
Following Fernandes signing a new deal with Sporting, it seems unlikely the midfielder will head to United or Tottenham.
