Manchester United legend, Roy Keane and Arsenal legend, Patrick Vieira have agreed on Paul Pogba, after Switzerland defeated France at the Euro 2020 round of 16 fixture on Tuesday night.
Pogba was unable to lead France to Euro 2020 quarter-finals as Les Bleus suffered a shock defeat to Switzerland on penalties, following a thrilling 3-3 draw over 120 minutes at National Arena.
The midfielder scored a magnificent goal to put France resolutely in control in the second half, as Didier Deschamps’ side led 3-1.
But Switzerland fought back gallantly, taking the game to extra-time and then penalties, when Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe saw his spot-kick saved as the Swiss won 5-4.
Speaking after the game, Keane was critical of Pogba, admitting he would find it frustrating to play in a team with the 28-year-old, picking out a defensive error.
“No doubt it would be frustrating,” Keane told ITV.
“But this is all part of Paul’s character that people love to see and it’s great.
“But then I’d be looking at the goal they conceded in injury time when he was sloppy in midfield, that is the bit I would be really critical of.
“It seems harsh because he’s done some brilliant stuff going forward today, there’s no doubt in Paul’s quality, it is just the other side, maybe his maturity.
“United have had these problems. Can he play in a two midfield? He probably can’t, he hasn’t got the discipline.
“Even today he leaves you frustrated, even with his brilliant quality going forward he lacks that discipline defensively.
“The top players do it week in and week out and Paul doesn’t quite do it.”
On his part, Vieira added, “I completely agree. “When you look at his potential, what he can do in midfield, you expect more from him.
“If he played next to Roy he would maybe be a different player because he needs someone on his back putting him under pressure and being demanding of him.
“It is frustrating because he can give much more than what he is giving to the team.”
