The former Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation and two-time head coach of the Super Eagles, Adegboye Onigbinde, has hailed late Nigerian legend, Teslim ‘Thunder’ Balogun, as the family marks his 49th memorial on Friday (today) in Lagos.
Onigbinde said the best goal he’s seen was scored by Balogun.
“The greatest goal ever by any footballer I have seen play was scored by ‘Thunder’ Balogun at the Olubadan Stadium in 1968 in the match between the Nigerian national team, then known as the UK Tourists and England,” Onigbinde said.
“During that match, the English players, knowing his trickery, clustered him each time he gained possession, to prevent him from wreaking havoc on their team.
“After frustrating him for most parts of the game, ‘Thunder’ planned his strategy well and gave the English players the biggest shock of their lives.
“He received a pass just outside the English penalty box, and with his back to goal, he flicked the ball with a sensational drive with so much power. The ball went the direction the keeper had anticipated, but it beat him hands down. It’s a goal I will never forget in my life.”
