Champions League: Solskjaer told he will be sacked if he ends season trophyless

Former Manchester United striker, Teddy Sheringham has said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be sacked as manager if he fails to win a trophy this season.

The Norwegian was backed heavily in the summer, with United spending over £130million on Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Solskjaer is now under serious pressure to end their wait for silverware.

United are left fighting in three competitions – the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League – after they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham last week.

They have now lost three of their last four matches after Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, piling further pressure on their manager, ahead of the Champions League game against Villarreal who defeated them in the Europa League final in May.

“Without a doubt there is pressure on him this year to win something. If he doesn’t win something, he knows the writing is on the wall.

“They have made big signings in Varane and Sancho. That would be enough but then Ronaldo becomes available, United acquire him and they need to see results now,” Sheringham told Sportsmail.
