Real Madrid have made an approach to sign Reece James, with the Chelsea defender yet to be offered a new deal by the Blues, according to Goal.
The Spanish giants are interested in exploiting any impasse in contract talks for the London side's highly-rated academy graduate.
Real are one of a host of Europe's top clubs that have approached James about a possible transfer.
Madrid's plan would be to potentially sign the defender in the 2023 summer transfer window.
In the short-term, the La Liga side's priority remains securing Paris Saint-Germain forward KylianMbappe, having already agreed a move for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.
Carlo Ancelotti's side are also ready to challenge the Blues and Liverpool to sign Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
