£60m star rejected Ten Hag’s Man United, joined EPL rivals

Newcastle’s new £60 million signing Alexander Isak refused to join Manchester United before becoming the Magpies’ record signing

The 22-year-old Sweden international signed for Newcastle last week after three seasons of impressing in LaLiga, and at Euro 2020.

Talksports quoted reports in Spain as saying Erik ten Hag’s side put a ‘juicy offer on the table’ for Isak, who turned them down before they could even negotiate with his former club, Real Sociedad.

He caught the eye so much that Man United reportedly also made their approach to the striker, which was rejected upon advice from his representative agency.

As is the situation with many modern transfers, buying clubs talk to the player before their team, with both Newcastle and Man United trying their hand, only to be turned away.

Real Sociedad was aware of an offer from the 13-time Premier League winners but an official approach never came in, due to Isak’s refusal.

Instead, Newcastle offered €50m [£43m] for the striker which was first rejected, before a €70m [£60m] offer was approved.
